017 Church Safety / Security Teams with US Navy SEAL William

Church Safety and Security Teams

David and Mark speak with guest, William, about establishing an All-Hazards response team and protocol for places of worship.  William is a retired US Navy SEAL who now serves as the Director of Campus Security for a large church and attached private school in Middle Tennessee.

This episode is packed full of no-nonsense, practical answers to some challenging questions.  We hope that it helps you inspire conversation and improved safety at your own church, synagogue, temple or place of worship.  Be sure to view the show notes or visit our website for more resources related to this topic.

About William:

  • We are only using William's first name partially for the sake of operational security and also to establish some separation between his role as a Subject Matter Expert and his day job working for his church.  The leadership team at his church was very supportive of him joining us and hope that this makes other congregations safer, but they are obviously not in the business of providing security consultation to other organizations.

  • William is the Director of Campus Security for a large (5,000+ members) church and private school in Middle Tennessee.  His security career began with 20-years in the US Navy as a SEAL and as a Master EOD Technician (bomb tech).

  • Additionally, he served as the Vice President for Security and Emergency Preparedness at the Los Angeles Dodgers for multiple seasons, served as the Deputy Director for the largest regulatory program within the Dept. of Homeland Security overseeing the security for over 450 federalized airports, and as a firearms and tactics instructor at the Institute of Police Science, Metropolitan DC Police Department.

  • William holds a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management from Southern Illinois University, was selected to pilot the first Transportation Leadership Program in 2010 at the University of Southern California's Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events, and is a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) with the American Society for Industrial Security, International.

Episode Resources:

1.  http://www.carlchinn.com

Carl Chinn's website exists to help Houses of Worship and Faith-Based Organizations (FBO's) recognize the need for intentional security and to provide simple concepts for starting or improving security programs.  The “Deadly Force History” section is where Carl keeps a log of deadly force events at Faith Based Organizations, the number of which is staggeringly high.

2.  https://www.fema.gov/plan

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) has published a report entitled “Engaging Faith-Based and Community Organizations: Planning Considerations for Emergency Managers“.

3.  https://thomrainer.com/2018/01/new-normal-church-security/

While not directly mentioned in the episode, this was a reference item that David used in preparation for the discussion.  This article discusses some of the resistance to security measures by the “vocal minority” in some congregations, and also some of the reasons why so many churches are adopting security programs.

4.  https://www.christianitytoday.com/edstetzer/2017/november/church-security-how-do-we-keep-our-people-safe-in-world-whe.html

This is another research source that David used but was not directly mentioned in the show.  More information about past violent incidents at churches and Faith Based Organizations and discussion on some of the challenges that smaller churches face when establishing safety teams.

016 Tiffany Johnson on Widening the 2A Tent. Diversity and Inclusion in the Firearms Community.

Tiffany Johnson and Aqil Qadir on Widening the 2A Tent.

(Diversity and Inclusion in the Firearms Community)

David sits down with the lovely, armed and responsibly dangerous Ms. Tiffany Johnson, Esq. of the FrontSightPress blog, and her partner Aqil Qadir of Civilians Safety Academy, to talk about diversity and inclusion in the Second Amendment community.  Joined by David's wife for her first-ever podcast appearance, the group discusses how the firearms community is often its own worst enemy in terms of welcoming others to the fold.

They also take to task the NRA for its questionable marketing tactics and lack of ownership for past mistakes.  Listeners may be interested to learn that many of the United States' gun laws have historically-verifiable racial beginnings.  What role did the NRA play in them?  Listen and find out.  You might be surprised!

We can't thank Tiffany and Aqil enough for placing their trust in us to come onto the show and talk about an issue that so many shy away from.  We hope that you enjoy the conversation as much as we did.  We certainly left with two extraordinary new friends as a result.

About Tiffany Johnson:

Tiffany is a “late bloomer” who underwent a 180-degree-conversion in the world of firearms. She grew up subscribing to common fears and misconceptions about guns and gun owners.  After college, she reluctantly enrolled in a Rangemaster handgun safety course, and she was hooked.

In addition to being mentored by Tom and Lynn Givens and other Rangemaster instructors, Tiffany has also trained under Jim Higginbotham, John Farnam, Craig Douglas, Massad Ayoob, Jeff Gonzales, Marshall Luton, and several respected veterans of the self-defense community.

She is member of the NRA and the Second Amendment Foundation, and she has earned instructor credentials from the State of Tennessee, the State of Mississippi, the National Rifle Association, Massad Ayoob Group, and Rangemaster (Advanced Instructor Certification).

Tiffany is also a lawyer and a teacher, teaching college courses at the University of Memphis where she coordinates their legal studies program.  Prior to starting her own business as a freelance legal writer and researcher, she practiced personal injury and civil rights law.

About Aqil Qadir:

Aqil is the founder and lead instructor of Citizens Safety Academy. His background as a firearms instructor started at age 12, teaching urban youth in his father’s gun club.

He followed in his dad’s footsteps, becoming an NRA Certified Instructor at the age of 22. Together they have been teaching Handgun Carry Permit classes since 1993.

Aqil has over 20 years of law enforcement experience, and more than half of that time was spent as a police firearms instructor. Since leaving law enforcement, his passion has been teaching responsible citizens how to protect themselves and their families.

015 Traveling While Armed (It’s Time for Vacation!)

Traveling While Armed.  It's Time for Vacation!

The Summer months are here and for many of us that means traveling for vacation!  David and Mark discuss the ins and outs of traveling while armed, share their personal experiences of flying with guns and dealing with the TSA, and driving across state lines with firearms.

As always we want to remind our listeners that this podcast and the statements made within it do not constitute legal advice.  You should always research, for yourself, the gun laws in the states and towns that you are visiting before going armed.  Likewise, you should always be cognizant of the laws that relate to specific modes of travel (planes, trains, buses, ships, etc.) and to the venues that you will be visiting.

A quick call to local law enforcement in the area where you will be staying can typically yield the answer to basic questions, and a multitude of research options exist on the Internet as well.

Episode Resources

Websites for Checking Gun Laws

Websites for Checking Local Crime Stats

  • City-Data is a great place to start researching a neighborhood. It provides crime rates broken down by type and compared year to year.
  • Family Watchdog  combines data from state sex offender registries to provide information on registered sex offenders. You can narrow down the results by zip code or by exact address.
  • Crime Reports partners with law enforcement agencies to provide public access to information. Areas where incidents have been reported will show on a map detailing the type and frequency of crimes.

Apps for Checking Local Crime Stats

  • Crime and Place has both a free and paid version (depending on the desired features). Use this app as you check out houses — it provides a moving map and compass to see the crime statistics in the surrounding area. It offers both personal and property crime scores and an interactive heat map.
  • CrimeMapping provides law enforcement data in a GPS-enabled map, so it will update as you travel through different neighborhoods.
  • SpotCrime gives real-time crime information for things like robberies, thefts, shootings, arrests and more.
